At first, it was only a sketch of dolphins that were jumping out of the waves. It is only a black and white drawing. Later, I considered of enhancing the artwork in digital format. So, I shot the drawing by my camera and opened it in Adobe Photoshop. I added dark and light blue colors on the waves and gave more contour lines to imitate the waves.<br />

I often see dolphins in the open sea when I travel by ship or boat. Dolphins usually travel in a group of at least two to perhaps twenty fish or more. They like to come closer to the boat and even swim near the hull or bow of the boat. It is a great attraction to watch dolphins in the middle of the ocean and not in an aquarium.<br />
Now, the above drawing is available in the form of luggage tags, stickers, mugs and etc.<br />

<b>Encountering Dolphins in the Middle of the Sea</b><br />
One day, I was returning to Sorong town from a snorkeling and island tour in Raja Ampat. I and 4 Czech tourists, as well as 3 boat crews were in a speed boat moving fast in the middle of the sea. Suddenly we saw a big group of dolphins. Some of them approached the boat and swim in parallel or in the same direction with the boat. Because the tourists were so happy to sea the boat, the driver reduce the speed. Unfortunately, this caused the dolphins to move away from the boat. Based on that experience, next time when we encounter dolphins, I will tell the driver to keep steady speed and direction and not reducing the speed of the boat. By doing this, I hope that we will have longer encounter with dolphins at sea.<br />
I used to make a painting of <a href="http://wildlife-papua-art.blogspot.co.id/2012/10/watercolor-painting-of-dolphins.html">Two Dolphins</a> using Derwent Watercolour Pencils and Canson paper. The artwork is now in the Netherlands.Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15691350583212460760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829767418212933488.post-24057860137026173092016-04-14T08:37:00.001-07:002024-03-16T09:26:05.910-07:00Blyth's Hornbill Birds - The Symbol of True LoveEvery time I go trekking in the jungle in West Papua, I often see Blyth's Hornbill birds. They are large birds that make New Guinea island and a lot of other islands in the same region as their natural habitat. Blyth's hornbills are large birds, they usually eat fruits from ficus tree, and nutmeg. They will spread the seeds from these birds to all direction of the forest thus expanding the growth of rainforest. When they fly, they create flutter sounds that are created by their wings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://leororing.redbubble.com" rel="nofollow" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjESHiC-iptPDbnaCq6TCSf5ykf4iVJAc2hmDybNum2idyjjepKHZAaRItGrEI1gBCDx4IAILsvxMW4Bl-CVRNeQl_8OPtKSoUHqzEQW_vbwGKN8USgLc3LVFJgHgzwVRZ0ZNDt_jrT8oDE/s320/hornbills.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A couple of Blyth's hornbills are considered as the Symbol of True love by some native Papuan tribes who live in the bird's head region of New Guinea. If one of them dies, the one that survives will fly or live forever alone. I create the digital illustration of these Blyth's hornbill birds using Inkscape. My objective is to promote the preservation of tropical rainforest environment to anybody who reads this article.<br />
Now the above digital illustration is available in various kinds of products print on demand products of Redbubble such as t-shirt, tote bags, spiral notebooks, and mugs.<br />

I went there early this year by airplane and visited several areas of the town including Wasur National Park. While in the park, I saw giant termite nest whose height could reach 3 meters from the ground. Much of the land in Merauke consists of lowland and swamps. That's why I could see various water plants. One the way back to town, I saw the water lily that looks so beautiful.<br />

Back at home, I opened my sketch book and decided to draw and color it. Because the watercolor pencils were not strong enough in depicting the contrast between the light and darker colors, I added Pentel watercolor to the painting. And then I used my Nikon camera to capture the picture. After some adjustment in Adobe Photoshop, finally, I could uploaded it onto my Redbubble portofolio.Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15691350583212460760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829767418212933488.post-21450301653091826832015-09-24T08:39:00.000-07:002024-03-16T09:28:51.537-07:00White Terrestrial OrchidHere is another terrestrial orchid whose petals are white. Here is the watercolor painting of Black Capped Lory (Lorius lory). I saw this bird while I was traveling in Raja Ampat islands. As a tourist guide, I often arrange tours and accompany tourists on various birdwatching and snorkeling trip in West Papua. Some of the destinations are Sorong regency, Tambrauw mountains and Raja Ampat. Raja Ampat is a famous place for diving and snorkeling. But the regency is also a nice place for birdwatchers. I saw this bird in Kri island and was attracted to it because of its colorful feather.<br />
I made the watercolor painting of the bird using Derwent Watercolor pencils. I offer the cut out version of this bird in my Redbubble store. It can be bought on various printed products from T-shirts and drawstring bags to iPhone cases and pillows. Here is the watercolor painting of orchid that I created last year. I think it is from Dendrobium family but I don't know its species name. I often see orchid plant in high trees when I guide tourists on trekking or birding tour in the forest of Manokwari or Sorong regency of West Papua.<br />
<div>
Orchids are epiphytes or air plants. This is true because most orchids grow in high trees on the junction between a branch and the main trunk of a tree. Their roots tightly cling to the tree and also gather moisture from the surrounding air. There are also species of this plant that grows on the ground taking nutrients from the soil.</div>
<div>
Orchid can also be seen as a sensual flower that is beautiful if artistically drawn or painted on canvas or paper. Because I like watercolor, I will make more artworks of orchids and upload them in this blog. </div>
<div>
I also have got the vector version of this painting that I made using Inkscape software. I uploaded it on my zazzle.com tropical art store.</div>

The artwork is available printed on various products from mugs to t-shirt and from mouse pad to adult apron.</div>

It was a pink rose mallow whose Latin name was Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. In my country, it is called Kembang Sepatu or Shoe Flower. This reptile is often seen in various artworks. The most popular snake in art world is dragon. Unfortunately, I have never seen it in real life. So, I prefer to make a painting of snake that is more realistic. The following picture is my painting of green snake that was portrayed at night among the leaves of a tree. Instead of sketching directly from nature, I used a photograph from the internet. The result is more dramatic than the photograph. Actually, the snake is quite small compared to the leaves but when it was drawn on a large paper it looks big.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm5eU8AqNLip327SVE13EXIvuVlYAx_TX9rKqCIPMwSv6XED-0KE2RZVIpz0fhHJGeNPPY-t76BJP10QpCcXu0su0DAF8LNKv1KlmtWRGYH4AwyUvmcTeYNLokkup-sfAN_8x-VF3ZLStb/s1600/watercolor-painting-of-snake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm5eU8AqNLip327SVE13EXIvuVlYAx_TX9rKqCIPMwSv6XED-0KE2RZVIpz0fhHJGeNPPY-t76BJP10QpCcXu0su0DAF8LNKv1KlmtWRGYH4AwyUvmcTeYNLokkup-sfAN_8x-VF3ZLStb/s400/watercolor-painting-of-snake.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I needed 2 days to complete the painting. The most important thing that I have to consider when drawing the sketch of the plant and the snake is trying to position the subjects in a balanced position. Finally, the result is an artwork that is not perfectly diagonal to the paper. It looks diagonal but the stalk of plant is positioned a little bit to the middle of the drawing area. by Charles RoringCharleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15691350583212460760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7829767418212933488.post-22891023289884767982012-10-18T00:31:00.002-07:002024-03-16T09:33:43.139-07:00Watercolor Painting of Gereja Lahai Roi<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is the painting of <i>Gereja Lahai Roi</i>. Gereja means church. The church is located in Mansinam, a small island in Manokwari regency of West Papua. Mansinam was the first place in New Guinea that received European missionaries on 5 February 1855 who went there to preach Gospel. Every year tens of thousands of town dwellers of Manokwari, together with pilgrims rom all corners of the world, come to Mansinam to celebrate the Gospel Preaching Day. Some intellectuals consider that day as the beginning of modern civilization of Papuan people. I used Staedler 2B graphite pencil to sketch the landscape before coloring it using Fabercastel and Derwent watercolour pencils. For me, creating fine lines for the details of coconut trees and the building of the church is much easier if it is carried out by pencil dan wet brush.</div>

Today, I have decided to spend more time painting the landscape, and wildlife of West Papua to create awareness among the city dwellers of Manokwari and the people of Indonesia that it is important to preserve our nature. If you are interested in watercolor painting then you need to practice sketching and painting now. Try to read the following book that I recommend to you.</div>

I created this watercolor painting of Dolphins when I was still living in Malang city. Now I live in Manokwari city in the eastern region of Indonesia. So, I am closer to nature here. Every time I travel to Numfor island by ferry, I always see dolphins coming out of the blue sea water. It's an amazing experience for me. I can feel the emotion and the energy that flow inside my body and mind while watching the dolphins at sea. This artwork is now in the Netherlands. A woman named Grietje owns it. I have seen dolphins many times since I was a university student. I work as a freelance tourist guide. I accompany visitors to Numfor island in Geelvink bay where we can enjoy snorkeling over pristine coral reef. I also enjoy hiking in the jungle. That's why most of my artworks are related to wildlife.<br />

This artwork was created using watercolour pencils. The quality of a drawing or painting is not only determined by the experience of the artist but also the quality of the materials. High quality paper will help an artist to make detailed strokes on his or her artwork. So, when you are interested in creating a watercolor artwork, don't forget to choose fine quality paper such as the cold press paper manufactured by Canson, and watercolors (my recommendation will be Derwent 72 Watercolor Pencil Metal Tin Set) Happy sketching and painting.</div>
